Jacob Holdt
I was just looking through some blogs and whilst looking at Huh Magazine I found the work of the photographer Jacob Holdt in their books you should own section, and looking at his work you definately should own the book. Kind of reminds me of Robert Frank (my favourite photographer you should also own his book The Americans), it's the sort og photogrpahy that makes me want to go for a walk with my camera. Anyway I just copied the text from Huh so you can read a bit about him.

Jacob Holdt is one of the most prolific and socially relevant documentary photographers I have ever come across. His pictures hold timeless thematic strength and important cultural messages about various social inequalities in America.

Holdt left his native Denmark and travelled to America in 1970 with forty dollars in his pocket and plans to leave the 'land of the free' soon after. The intended short stay turned in to a five-year sofa crawl while hitch hiking over 100,000 miles and staying in over four-hundred different homes. Apparently, after the forty dollars ran out, Holdt sold his blood twice a week just to pay for his rolls of film. While on his blood selling hitch hike, Holdt managed to infiltrate secret Ku Klux Klan meetings as well as gaining entry to Republican presidential campaign quarters, southern slave camps and following criminals during muggings and drug deals.

Unfortunately, such thoroughly executed work presented in a genuine context is becoming more and more rare among photographers. Many photographers will instead try to exaggerate or heighten the appearances of tension or trouble purely for superficial photographic effect. Holdt's honesty in this project is what sets it miles apart from most other documentary photographers attempting to make relevant social and political commentary. These unpretentious lo-fi snapshots both document and compare the vulgarity of the rich, the racists and the law to the struggles of the underclasses. This juxtaposition of imagery creates an accurate portrait of a progressively troubled America.

The book has been a constant influence on my way of thinking and suggests that, maybe, the simple ways of life are the most enjoyable. The poor are often shot in scenes of ecstatic joy and pleasure while dancing or jumping off a balcony in to a swimming pool. It's like this book is screaming out at you to enjoy life and be humble while you're at it. (Huh Magazine)

Me&Yu Afflecks@Christmas and a sneak peak of a new design
Hannah our resident polyvore expert has been doing some Christmas themed style sheets

Snuggle up with Me&Yu@Afflecks this Christmas.
Over the Christmas holidays Me&Yu doesn't doubt that you'll all be party party partying but don't forget those cold nights in and winter walks. Wrap up warm with an oversized hoodie or sweatshirt and get yourself your very own Wolfdeer and Nightowl(available in Afflecks only). If you want to dress up your winter warmer then team it with one of our skirts from our festive skirt collection. Boys, you can team your hoodie or sweatshirt with a pair of Me&Yu low crotch skinnies and vintage brogues. Add some Me&Yu warmth into your wardrobe this Christmas! Our Afflecks store is open everyday from now until Christmas eve and next week we're open until 7pm everyday (except xmas eve).
Here's a sneak preview of one of our new designs for the forthcoming Spring Summer 2010 collection - 'Me&Yu takes a trip'

For those art historians among you the background is Durers Apocalypse, for those of you who don't know about it (I didn't till I googled images the word Apocalypse) read this and get educated

'The greatest printmaking achievement of Dürer's early years was The Apocalypse, a set of 15 woodcuts on the revelations of St John. Telling the story of the end of the world and the coming of the Kingdom of God, this series of large prints displays great imagination and power. The famous series influenced the later treatment of the subject in northern Europe, especially France'

Good Grief!! (and Wadeye)
So there's a new shop next to us in Afflecks now, it's called Good Grief, they sell art books, prints and posters, fanzines and comics (not the shit type!!!) and it's pretty amazing. I'd been avoiding going in cos I didn't want to spend any money but finally I succumbed on saturday and bought a couple of Seripop screened posters (I've blogged about seripop before - google them)

so you should definately check it out and buy some stuff - improve yourself!!!

We've been pretty hectic of late and I've missed my sunday morning look at vbs.tv. Anyway as today was my first day of for weeks I decided to watch a few films from Vice TV. You should really look at the one on the Heavy Metal gangs in Wadeye (australia) - click on the pic to go to vbs.
It's quite surreal - basically these aborigines in a remote settlement in the Northern Territories us the names of Heavy Metal bands as there gang names (Judas Priest, Pantera, Slayer etc) it's very bizarre but definately worht a watch.
