Me&Yu is pleased to be involved in the No Fin No Future event in Tokyo.
We were asked by Pangeaseed to design a limited edition t-shirt to be auctioned at their event to raise awareness of shark overfishing. As well as producing a limited edition design, we have also created a photo montage image that will be sold on our website.
Please take sometime to read the information below
Shark overfishing is driven by the high demand for shark fins but the overfishing is also due to unintended catch called "bycatch". Shark specialists estimate that 100 million sharks are killed for their fins, annually. One pound of dried shark fin can retail for $300 or more. It's a multi-billion dollar industry.
Shark conservation is an enormous challenge because sharks are being fished out of the water by the millions each month and cannot reproduce fast enough to overcome overfishing. Sharks are already gone in many of the areas where they were once plentiful. The fishing pressure against them continues relentlessly, largely because of the market demand for their fins.
Complicating matters is man's fear and ignorance of sharks, which results in people either not caring about sharks, or thinking that it is a good thing to kill them. Many people are still unaware of the of disastrous impact that shark eradication has on the oceans and food supply, or don't know that mercury in shark fin soup is extremely hazardous to your health.
At the moment there are no local/national campaigns or organizations in place in Japan to educate the public and raise awareness of this crisis. Through volunteer activism and grassroots movement, we at PangeaSeed are aiming to change that.
